Railway Museum
The Bi-Centennial Railway Museum was opened in 1988 to commemorate the men who built the Great Northern Railway. The Armidale Railway Station was built by Edmond Lonsdale in 1882, and welcomed its first train on 01 February 1883. The fine cast iron work was completed at New England Foundry in Uralla by Henry Sheldon Goddard. The ornamental chimneys and mouldings are typical of buildings of this period. Nearby is a two-storey stationmaster’s residence similar to the one at Uralla. Exterior exhibits can be viewed at any time. Interior display open 11am - 11.30am each day.
Admission is free. Donations welcome.

McLeans Corner
The walls you see in the display have been retained as a sample of the archaeological remains found on this site. They come from the earliest period of European settlement of Armidale and recall the vanished lifestyles, people and stories that helped shape the town.
James McLean, the original landholder, business man, one-time mayor and coroner of Armidale, built his flourmill and adjacent house/ store here in the late 1850’s. In 1874 McLean expanded his business by adding a large two storey general store. In doing so, he demolished the ease end of the house, which originally extended all the way to the corner.
The house foundations were not removed however, and the east-west wall seen in this display is the front wall of the house as it survives beneath the store. The north-south foundations we see belong to the western wall of the 1874 store. They abut the earlier foundations, which are a finer, more solid construction. The basalt stone was extracted from quarries near Armidale. Above them, the walls were constructed of relatively poor-quality local orange brick, used prior to the discovery of the good quality blue-brick clays typical of Armidale buildings after the 1880’s.
Information on flour mills: Four flour mills operated in Armidale at the height of the production in the 1860’s. However the wheat and flour milling industry declined when the railway arrived in 1883 bringing better quality flour at a cheaper price. McLean’s mill was demolished between 1900 and 1912.
Information on the new store: The new store had had three large plate glass windows opening onto Marsh Street, two double-door entrances, and the interior was fitted throughout with cedar, including storage racks for rolls of the fine materials and silks upstairs.
James Browning: a skin and hide merchant, bought the store and house on McLean’s death in 1912. He and his sons traded here for the next three decades. These two buildings survived into the 1940’s when they were demolished to make way for a garage outlet run by Woodward and Purkiss, selling tractors. The business was later taken over by Goodyear Auto-Service, operating until early 2001.
Information on the photos: An archaeological team from the Heritage Futures Research Centre of the University of New England uncovered these remains in 2001 and 2002. The excavation and interpretation project was supported by UNE, the NSW Heritage Office, the developer of the East End Mall, New England Properties and the Armidale Dumaresq Council.

Old Teacher's College
This fine building is in the style of the Italian Renaissance, with the main entrance featuring six iconic columns. It was modelled on the Sydney Teacher’s College and it provided educational training for country students until 1994, when it was transferred to a building on the University of New England campus. The two Institutions had amalgamated in 1988 and the University had been given guardianship of the complex of building on the site. The building is now known as C.B. Newling in honour of the first principal of the College. It houses several educational and community organisations and plays a vital part of the community activities. The Friends of the Old Teachers’ College, established in 1997, have been active in encouraging community use of the building. They have been able to raise funds for essential refurbishment, (in particular the Auditorium) having raised over $250,000.00 in grants and fundraising activities, and have had several projects to preserve the building’s history and heritage.
They have recently established a College History Room in the front of the building to house items of significance, including the original desk and bookcases of the first principal Mr Cecil Bede Newling. This room is open to the public Monday to Friday between the hours of 10am – 12noon and 2pm - 4pm with access to other parts of the building. For further information please contact Eleanor Monley on

The motto, ‘Non Scholae sed vitae’,
means ‘Not for school but for life’.
The implication of the College motto is that,
while schools have often tended to develop procedures not very useful in the outside world, the teaching of our College is ‘for life’.
