Celebrating the Reformation in Music

Five hundred years ago this month Martin Luther published his 95 Theses in Wittemburg taking the first step in the protestant Reformation. This major historical event is being celebrated in music by Lena Schmalz in the music this Market Sunday Concert.

Music was an important part of Luther’s life and he advocated using it in worship to express the glory of God. Consequently he was the composer of many hymns which are still sung. Lena will be be presenting preludes to a number of these composed across five centuries. The composers are Praetorius (1571-1621), Pachelbel (1653-1706), JS Bach (1685-1750), Brosig (1815-1887), Reger (1873-1916), Michelsen (1902-1973), Nagel (b. 1958). The first (Praetorius) and the last (Nagel) choral preludes are on the tune "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God).

Lena Schmalz is one of the most accomplished organists in Armidale and this is a wonderful chance to hear a program of music with a strong musical and historical thematic link, with composers from different times solving essentially the same musical challenge.
